Happy Summer Everyone

Wow, what a school year, as we finish the 2019-2020 school year, I'd like to congratulate all the students for their perseverance!

When I think back on this past school year, I know that I would not have gotten through it without the support of the amazing Borel staff. We truly had to lean on each other. It is an awesome thing to see, the strength, courage and the humility of the human spirit.

Parents, I am extremely grateful for your support throughout the school year and how you embraced our quick pivot to Distance Learning. Thank you for your partnership as we navigated a school year for the history books.

With appreciation,

Kenyetta Cook

Supporting Social Justice

Equity and supporting all students is a cornerstone belief of the San Mateo-Foster City School District and the Board of Trustees. It is of the utmost importance to actualize our vision and create supportive environments where every individual is treated with dignity and respect. Our schools and classrooms must be places where our children can learn acceptance and belonging.

Families may be wondering how to begin or navigate conversations related to Race and Social Justice. Other families may be feeling vulnerable, upset or stressed during an already difficult time. These resources were selected by SMFCSD educators to help families discuss and address racial inequities within our society, explicitly offer support to our families who disproportionately experience those inequities and inform our community of the steps we are taking to address these systemic issues.

Eighth Grade Promotion Plans

As a reminder, the Promotion Committee met several weeks ago to create a plan to celebrate our 8th graders. This plan took into account the Shelter In Place Order, size of our 8th grade class (344 students) and safety of students and staff. The plan below was shared in the May 21 Bobcat Blast to mark this special time for our eighth graders.

  •  All eighth graders received a sign delivered by a staff member to put on their lawn or a window in their home.
  • On promotion day, June 16, a virtual promotion video will be sent out to students. At 2pm, you and your family will receive an email link to your virtual promotion. We’re hoping you can plan some time with your family to watch and celebrate your accomplishments and transition to high school. The promotion video will contain a teacher montage, congratulatory remarks from Principal Cook, graduate reflection speech from student body, presentation of the Bobcat Spirit Award by Assistant Principal Notte, Procession slides of each eighth grade student and one or two surprises.
  • Promotion certificates and a program of the virtual promotion ceremony will be mailed home the week of June 15.

Additionally, the Cities of Burlingame, Foster City, Hillsborough, Millbrae, San Bruno and San Mateo; as well as the Burlingame, Hillsborough City, Millbrae, San Bruno Park, San Mateo-Foster City and San Mateo Union High School Districts invite all residents to celebrate and recognize graduates from all local public and private high schools, middle schools and elementary schools as a community - safely and while sheltering at home.

Residents may also print a sign to post on your front door or window to share your support of the class of 2020. Let's show all of our students who are moving on to the next step in their education or graduating from high school some encouragement and acknowledge their hard work! Let's make some noise for the class of 2020!!

Thank you Borel families for your generous donations to the Police Activity League (PAL)

San Mateo PAL staff & SMPD School Resource Officers thank the Borel families & staff! San Mateo PAL has been helping to feed local youth and families through their Food for Families campaign. And PAL, would like to send out a special thanks to Borel Families, as many have generously donated towards this cause. To date, PAL has provided 1,500 essential food & pantry kits to local youth and families that have needed the extra support during these difficult times and plans to continue until no longer needed. PAL could not do this without all your help, and we very much appreciate the support.

PAL is offering a variety of virtual programs and other opportunities this summer and continuing to "Build the Bond Between Cops & Kids." If you are interested in any of our programs, please go to the PAL website at www.sanmateopal.org and check out the Seasonal Program tab.

School Site Council Positions Open for Fall

The School Site Council (SSC) is a group of parents, teachers, and school administrators that meet to review and discuss the School Site Plan and to discuss and make decisions regarding use of site funds to meet our site goals.

There are two open parent positions on SSC. Applications for these positions, and elections if necessary, will occur in August/September. The term runs for two school years, 2020-21 and 2021-22.

SSC Overview

The School Site Council works to develop and recommend goals for the SPSA (the Single Plan for Student Achievement) and assesses progress in meeting the goals outlined in the plan. It is a leadership organization that is crucial to our school’s success for our future. The general focus of the Site Council is to ensure that the school is continually engaged in identifying and implementing curriculum and instructional practices that result in both strengthening the core academic program and ensuring that the students have access to and success in that program. School Site members agree to a 2 year commitment.

Site Council Purpose

A. To develop and recommend goals for the Single Plan for Student Achievement.

B. To assess progress meeting the goals outlined in the plan.

C. To review the goals of the plan and data related to student learning/student achievement to prepare the annual report of progress for the Board of Education, Superintendent, community and Borel parents and provide future direction in rewriting the plan.
